What makes a network good?

Coverage matters, but reliability, stall count, payment options and location quality matter more on long journeys. A four-stall site at a motorway service area is often better than a single cheaper charger in a city car park.

The best network for you depends on country, vehicle charging curve and whether you have discounted tariffs through your car brand or mobility provider.

Ionity and Fastned for motorway travel

Ionity has strong motorway coverage and high-power chargers across many European corridors. It can be expensive without a subscription, but it is often strategically placed for long-distance travel.

Fastned is known for reliable sites, drive-through layouts and clear pricing. Coverage is strongest in parts of Western Europe and continues to expand.

Regional leaders matter

EnBW is very strong in Germany. Allego has broad European coverage. Tesla Superchargers are increasingly open to non-Tesla vehicles at selected sites.

For cross-border trips, combine a route planner with operator apps and check recent reliability before relying on a remote single-stall charger.
