The three connector names you need to know

Most European EV drivers will use Type 2 for AC charging and CCS2 for rapid DC charging. CHAdeMO still exists on older Nissan and Mitsubishi models, but new European infrastructure is overwhelmingly CCS.

If you are renting or borrowing an EV, check the charge port before planning a long route. A CCS car can normally use both slower AC destination chargers and fast motorway chargers.

How public charging is priced

Pricing varies by country and operator. The most common models are per kWh, per minute, session fees, or a mix of all three. Motorway ultra-fast charging is convenient but usually the most expensive.

For road trips, compare the total cost of charging plus the time saved. A €0.79/kWh ultra-fast charger can be worth it when it avoids a detour or a long queue.

Roaming apps and payment cards

Apps such as Electroverse, Chargemap, Shell Recharge and Plugsurfing can simplify cross-border travel, but roaming prices are not always the cheapest. Always compare the operator app with your roaming card before starting a session.

Keep at least two payment options active. A backup RFID card is useful when mobile data is weak or an app login fails.

Planning reliable long-distance routes

Plan charging stops around arrival state of charge, not just maximum range. A good rule is to arrive with 10-20% battery at rapid chargers and more if weather is cold or mountainous.

Use EVRoutes to compare charging stops along your route, then verify critical stops with the charging network app shortly before departure.

FAQ

Can one app cover all European charging?

No single app is perfect. Use one roaming app plus the native apps for major networks on your route.

Is CCS the standard in Europe?

Yes. CCS2 is the dominant rapid-charging standard for modern European EVs.
