EV Road Trip Planning Tips
Practical EV road trip advice: range buffers, charging stops, winter driving, accommodation, route planning and what to pack.
Plan around stops, not maximum range
The easiest mistake is planning as if the battery goes from 100% to 0%. In real life, fast trips happen between roughly 10% and 80%, where charging speed is highest and buffers are safe.
For a relaxed trip, choose stops with food, toilets, lighting and more than one charger.
Weather changes everything
Cold temperatures, heavy rain, strong headwinds and roof boxes can reduce range. Add extra buffer in winter and in mountainous areas.
If a leg looks tight, slow down slightly. Speed is one of the biggest controllable factors in EV consumption.
Bring the right backup kit
Keep a Type 2 cable, charging cards, tyre kit, phone charger and offline route notes. For rural travel, note a fallback charger before you need it.
If travelling with family, choose charging stops that feel like breaks rather than delays.
