What's Happening

[Correction: Tuesday April 21, 7:28 ET: An original version of this story mistakenly reported that GM had confirmed the news, and that the trucks were canceled. The company has not, and the story is based on sources cited by Crain's, who claim the program is suspended. ] This would be a massive reversal for a company that has aggressively pursued the market for large, high-range electric trucks and SUVs.

Why This Matters for EV Owners

  • Versions of the Chevrolet and GMC trucks can go over 400 miles on a charge and weigh over 9,000 pounds
  • They are massive, excessive, expensive products, with unmatched towing range, tons of power, and 350-kilowatt fast charging

  • Ford has already canceled the all-electric F-150 Lightning and its planned electric successor

The Bigger Picture

Crosstown rival Ram also killed the purely electric version of its 1500 truck, with both it and Ford opting to build "extended range electric vehicle" versions instead. GM wouldn't confirm to Crain's if it was pursuing the same path, merely said that it hasn't canceled any of its electric trucks. "GM has not cancelled any electric trucks," GM spokesman Kevin Kelly told InsideEVs via email. "EVs remain the end game for GM and we are firmly committed to our award-winning electric truck and SUV portfolio, along with our advanced technology roadmap. What This Means for Your Wallet

Based on current European charging rates, DC fast charging costs between €0.30-0.65 per kWh depending on the network and country. This translates to roughly 40-60% savings compared to equivalent petrol costs. A typical fast-charging session takes 20-45 min (10-80% DC fast) — enough time for a coffee break on a long trip.

Real-World Range Considerations

EVRoutes' route calculations account for real-world conditions. In winter, expect 15-30% range reduction due to battery chemistry and cabin heating. Pro tip: Pre-conditioning the battery before DC fast charging can improve charging speeds by up to 30% in cold weather.

What to Watch Next

View Comments Delaying a next-generation fully electric truck program could hit a bit harder at GM due to the sheer number of large models it offers on the platform. The Silverado EV, Sierra EV, Hummer EV SUV, Hummer EV Pickup, and Cadillac Escalade IQ are flagship models for their respective truck brands. The company has announced plans to introduce "eyes-off" Level 3 highway autonomy on the Escalade IQ in 2028. Related Stories Nobody Is Winning The Electric Pickup Truck War.
